   1/2 cup butter or margarine

   1/2 cup sugar

   1 egg

   2 1/2 cups flour

   11-2 tsp. Soda

   1/2 tsp. Salt

   1 tsp. Cinnamon

   1 tsp. Ginger

   1/2 tsp. Cloves

   1 cup dark molasses

   1 cup water

 

   Preheat oven to 350 degrees cream butter and sugar together; add egg and blend.

   Combine dry ingredients and mix into butter mixture alternately with molasses and water.

   Pour batter into a greased, floured 9x9x2-inch-baking pan. Bake for 40 minutes or until

   done.

 

   Variations

 

   Add one of the following to the batter:

   3/4 cup chopped dates

   1 cup mashed banana and reduce milk to 1/2 cup

   1/2 cup chopped cranberries and 1 tbs. Orange peel

   3/4 cup chopped dried apricots

   1 tbs. Grated lemon peel

   1/2 cup raisins and 1-2 tsp. Cinnamon

   1/2 cup chocolate chips

   3/4 cup chopped dried pears

   3/4 cup chopped dried prunes
